I’m putting together a reading list of fantastical short stories:
The Fantastic as defined by Todorov occupies the space between pure fantasy (the marvelous in Todorov’s nomenclature) and the uncanny (seemingly supernatural events that have a psychological explanation)
Then there’s the speculative, the post-modern, magic realism. In my head I shelter them under my own genre, a pterodactyl-patterned silver umbrella loosely defined as ‘strange things happen.’
The fantastic is that hesitation experienced by a person who knows only the laws of nature, confronting an apparently supernatural event.
