Double Japanese Fantasy Excellence: Moribito

by Nahoko Uehashi, translated by Cathy Hirano

We discovered Moribito through the animated series (which is amazing) but the books are also wonderful. Balsa, the heroine is a female bodyguard who saves a young prince’s life in passing. To her surprise, it transpires that the boy’s father, the Mikado wants to kill him and his mother, the Second Queen hires her to protect him from the ruler’s elite assassins. Balsa is an amazing heroine, fearless, wise and conflicted. Violence is not dealt with lightly, Balsa bears the responsibility for the deaths which saved her life in the past and has tasked herself with saving an equal number of lives. The sequel is even better than the first book.

Manga fans of 10+ will adore this.
