Shadowshaper is a YA teen urban fantasy set in present day Brooklyn, with a Puerto Rican teen girl protagonist, Sierra Santiago. Sierra becomes involved with  her grandparents secret world of magic and shadowshaping or gathering spirits into a creation: art, storytelling or dance. Which is a totally awesome concept and Sierra is a supercool character, barrelling through Brooklyn and Manhattan and taking on all comers with the help of Haitian Robbie, a boy at her school with Shadowshaping powers. The Brooklyn setting feels warm and real, the narrative is super fast-paced and dialogue snappy. I would have enjoyed more world-building around the magic elements, but that might just be me. For the target audience this is a great, contemporary urban fantasy read. 12+
